Brief Biography:  I was an atheist when I majored in political science at Harvard, and was converted by Jehovah’s Witnesses due to my ignorance of the Bible.  Eventually I became a JW elder, then Presiding Overseer (pastor) of a Kingdom Hall.  My wife and I began reading the Bible (which is unusual for JWs, who focus on Watchtower literature, not the Bible itself) with the aim of becoming better JWs — but instead we found Jesus.

I preached a sermon at Kingdom Hall, urging JWs to read the Bible instead of The Watchtower.  They never let me preach again, but my wife and I remained at Kingdom Hall for months, working underground to help relatives and others escape the sect.  After being put on trial, and facing death threats, we began inviting JWs to meet at our home instead, to read the Bible and learn about Jesus.

We received Christ, then Christian baptism by an associate of Dr. Walter Martin, and joined a Bible-believing Baptist church.  The research I did to get my own theology straight went into my first book, Jehovah’s Witnesses Answered Verse by Verse, published by Baker Books in 1986.  I soon went into counter-cult ministry, reaching out to sect members with the real Gospel of Christ, and helping families and individuals impacted by the cults.

I served a decade as a contributing editor with Dr. Walter Martin’s Christian Research Journal.  In 1997 and again in 2015 I taught at the annual School of Theology at Spurgeon’s Metropolitan Tabernacle in London.  I’ve preached as far away as Japan, and at many churches in the local area — often as a repeat speaker.
